If you thought the ghost-busting fun was over after Ghostbusters: Afterlife, think again! Sony has just announced that a sequel is in the works, and it’s set to hit theaters on December 20, 2023. Here’s what we know so far about the next installment of the spooky comedy franchise.

The Cast

The new sequel will bring back most of the main cast from Ghostbusters: Afterlife, including:

  • McKenna Grace as Phoebe Spengler, the smart and quirky granddaughter of Egon Spengler
  • Finn Wolfhard as Trevor Spengler, the adventurous and rebellious grandson of Egon Spengler
  • Carrie Coon as Callie Spengler, the estranged daughter of Egon Spengler and mother of Phoebe and Trevor
  • Paul Rudd as Gary Grooberson, the lovable and nerdy teacher who helps the kids with their ghost-hunting equipment
  • Celeste O’Connor as Lucky Domingo, the friendly and fearless local girl who befriends Phoebe and Trevor
  • Bill Murray as Peter Venkman, the sarcastic and charismatic leader of the original Ghostbusters
  • Dan Aykroyd as Ray Stantz, the enthusiastic and knowledgeable member of the original Ghostbusters
  • Ernie Hudson as Winston Zeddemore, the loyal and practical member of the original Ghostbusters

The sequel will also introduce some new faces to the mix, such as:

  • Kumail Nanjiani as ??? (maybe a new villain or a rival ghost-hunter?)
  • Patton Oswalt as ??? (maybe a fanboy or a journalist?)
  • James Acaster as ??? (maybe a ghost or a comedian?)
  • Emily Alyn Lind as ??? (maybe a love interest or a sidekick?)

We don’t know much about their roles yet, but we’re sure they’ll add some laughs and surprises to the story.

The Plot

The sequel will follow the events of Ghostbusters: Afterlife, which saw Phoebe, Trevor and Gary team up with Ray, Peter and Winston to stop an ancient evil from destroying Summerville, a small town in Oklahoma where Egon had hidden his ghost-busting equipment. Along the way, they discovered their connection to Egon and his legacy as a Ghostbuster.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife 2

The sequel will take the gang to New York City, where they will move into the iconic firehouse that served as the headquarters of the original Ghostbusters. There, they will face new challenges and threats from the supernatural world, while also exploring the history and secrets of their predecessors.

The sequel will be directed by Gil Kenan, who co-wrote the script with Jason Reitman. Reitman directed Ghostbusters: Afterlife and is the son of Ivan Reitman, who directed the first two Ghostbusters movies. Kenan is best known for directing Monster House and Poltergeist.

The Hype

Ghostbusters: Afterlife was a solid hit for Sony during the pandemic years, earning $204 million at the box office. It was praised by critics and fans alike for its nostalgic homage to the original movies, its heartfelt tribute to Harold Ramis (who played Egon and passed away in 2014), and its fresh and funny take on the franchise.

The sequel is expected to be one of the biggest movies of 2023, especially since it will be released during the holiday season.

Sony has been building out its Ghostbusters universe and also has an animated feature and animated series in the works. The sequel is part of their plan to revive and expand the beloved franchise for a new generation.
